Stream A – Plant Programs:
Successful candidates will work with plant health staff to verify compliance with federal acts and regulations. Duties may include: inspecting pedigreed seed crops for varietal purity; soil sampling; sampling fertilizers; conducting plant pest surveys; Asian Gypsy Moth vessel inspections; and interacting with the public and producers. These duties involve extensive walking, possibly up to 16 kilometres a day, in variable weather conditions and can include climbing up to 8 metres
Stream B – Meat Hygiene/Food Safety Programs:
Successful candidates will work with veterinary and/or inspection staff to verify the safety of meat, poultry and/or other food products manufactured and/or imported for sale in Canada. Duties may include: inspecting animal carcasses, viscera and organs; ante-mortem inspection; inspecting food processing and/or import facilities and products to verify compliance with federal acts and regulations.

These positions are intended to respond to short-term, seasonal, or critical inspection issues where the focus is on delivery of a single or limited number of program aspects requiring basic knowledge or training.

For individuals who are currently employees of CFIA, or who have inspection experience with CFIA or its precursor departments:
• Completion of post-secondary education OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
For individuals who are not current or former employees of CFIA:
• University graduation with specialization in a field related to the functions of the position, such as agriculture, forestry, biology, horticulture, veterinary, food sciences, or food technology.
Applicants submitting education credentials from a non-Canadian institution are responsible for obtaining certification that these credentials are the equivalent of the Canadian education level required for the position. This certification may be obtained from a recognized Canadian educational institution or through a credential evaluation service. Conditions of employment
Reliability Status security clearance – Applicants who have not lived in Canada for the past five (or ten, depending on security level) years may be required to submit a police certificate from each country in which they have lived for six months or more during this period, as well as other documentation required for the security screening process. Failure to submit this documentation if requested will eliminate the application from further consideration.

• Willingness and availability to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays
• Willingness to work overtime as required
• Willingness to travel extensively may be required for some positions
• Ability to work in environmentally challenging/physically demanding conditions

Preference may be given to CFIA candidates at any stage of the selection process. Should a volume management strategy be used, communication regarding the application of the strategy will be provided to those candidates who are impacted.
