If so, consider joining the Niagara Workforce Planning Board (NWPB) team through a Work Experience Program, called CreateAction. NWPB is a think-and-do tank that works to address challenges within workforce development and we’re seeking support in expanding our community relations efforts.
As Community Relations Assistant, you would:
– be supported by the Community Relations Lead, every step of the way;
– assist in facilitating dialogue and design labs with community partners through meeting planning, preparation, and capturing notes in creative ways;
– help identify and strengthen relationships within Indigenous and racially diverse communities as well as aligned allies working towards social and systemic change;
– amplify the diverse experiences of individuals navigating through Niagara’s employment system through a marketing spotlight series and create content to help build community through social media.
Preferred Skills + Qualities
– Interpersonal and communication skills (great listening skills will be an asset)
– Curiosity (asking questions is highly valued)
– Creativity (we are seeking someone who is talented in visual arts and/or graphic design)
– Dependable (you are organized, punctual, and you do what you say you will do)
*Preference will be given to youth who are not in education, employment or training.
Details + Benefits
6-month term (Start date: January 10, 2022, End date: July 8, 2022).
$19.50 per hour, full-time (up to 37.5 hours per week).
Paid Statutory Holidays and up to 6 paid personal/sick days. Since the program is a 6-month contract, you would be paid out for vacation days at the end of the placement instead of being allotted vacation time.
The NWPB team operates Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm. Flexibility is part of our workplace culture (for example, arrangements can be made to work-from-home a few days per week and work-from-office other days). Our office is located on a direct bus route, at 3550 Schmon Parkway, Thorold, Ontario. Laptop computer and any necessary equipment for remote working will be provided.
Learning Plan (created between you and the Community Relations Lead) and professional/personal development sessions are included (will take place during working hours, including 5 hours per month for national virtual learning sessions, 4 hours per month for virtual networking + 3 learning days). Reciprocal learning is central to this opportunity.
Access to mental health counselling, through a virtual platform called InkBlot.
Additional funds for work related expenses (e.g. childcare or transportation) can be negotiated.

This work experience placement is part of the CreateAction Inclusive Social Innovation program.
The Community Relations Assistant will be part of a network of CreateAction participants and will join in regular peer learning sessions and evaluation activities delivered by the program partners: the Canadian CED Network, the National Association of Friendship Centres, and the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation.
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
(a) be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at start of placement;
(b) be a Canadian citizen, or permanent resident or a protected person as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;
(c) be legally entitled to work in Canada;
(d) be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial
(e) be experiencing one or more barriers to employment; and/or
(f) be not in education, employment, or training (NEET).
