Celebrated in Canada every 21 June, National Indigenous Peoples Day is an official day of celebration to recognize and honour the heritage, cultures and valuable contributions to society by First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. National Indigenous Peoples Day is the same day as the summer solstice (the longest day of the year) and was chosen for its important symbolism to many Indigenous peoples. bit.ly/2Y4df5I ... For me the Pipe Dreams Welding Program was a great opportunity to get into the trades. Before starting the program, I didn’t have any experience in welding specifically, but all of the work experience I did have was hands-on. I knew I wanted to get into something that had a future and a career and welding is an industry that is going to be around for a while. My favourite part about this program is being in the shop and actually getting to practice. Getting to know not only welding, but how exactly the machines work, what affects them, and getting to know firsthand everything that I would need know to be successful in my job. At first, I was a little nervous because it had been years since I had any experience with welding specifically, and I wasn’t sure how well I would do keeping up with the heavy workload. But after seeing how I progressed, and how much my weld improved over the course, I really began to gained confidence apply myself 100 per cent. To other students who are on the fence about enrolling in the program, try and test your boundaries a little bit, get yourself out of your comfort zone, because it’s a great opportunity and if you jump on it you’ll thank yourself in the end!
